Overview

Clickers (a.k.a. Audience/Personal/Student Response Systems) provide a convenient means for students to actively participate in class. These systems provide immediate feedback for the student and instructor about misunderstandings or confusion of content.

At SCC we have standardized on the einstruction.com system using CPS software.

When CPS is opened the Help Menu takes the user through the basic steps of setting up your database, classes, and lessons.

Under Options (on leftside) click on "Download This Folder"
To download individual files click on desired file
A second window will open, notice a message "Fetching file..." In a short time notice the prompt "Click here to begin download"
File will download to your "Downloads" folder

(the following best practices are from an Educause article on research on use of clickers in large classrooms)

Best Practices for Implementing Clickers in the Classroom*

1. Keep slides short to optimize legibility.

2. Keep the number of answer options to five.

3. Do not make the questions overly complex.

4. Keep voting straightforward—systems allow complex branching, but keep it simple.

5. Allow sufficient time for students to answer questions. Some general guidelines:

Classes of fewer than 30 students: 15–20 seconds per question
Classes of 30 to 100 students: 30 seconds per question
Classes of more than 100 students: 1 minute per question

6. Allow time for discussion between questions.

7. Encourage active discussion with the audience.

8. Do not ask too many questions; use them for the key points.

9. Position the questions at periodic intervals throughout the presentation.

10. Include an "answer now" prompt to differentiate between lecture slides and interactive polling slides.

11. Use a "correct answer" indicator to visually identify the appropriate answer.

12. Include a "response grid" so that students know their responses have registered.

13. Increase responsiveness by using a "countdown timer" that will close polling after a set amount of time.

14. Test the system in the proposed location to identify technical issues (lighting, signal interference, etc.)

15. On the actual day of the session, allow time to set out clickers and start system.

16. Rehearse actual presentation to make sure it will run smoothly.

17. Provide clear instructions on how to use the clickers to the audience.

18. Do not overuse the system or it will lose its "engagement" potential

Download CPS Software

CPS software runs on Windows and Macintosh. The CPS software comes in two flavors: CPS and CPS for Powerpoint.

CPS: creates the database, classes, and lessons.

CPS for Powerpoint: adds a plugin to Powerpoint. The lessons (commonly referred to as questions) included as slides within Powerpoint presentation.

Podcasting Equipment (from Paula Henry)

Simple Audio Recording
For the basic podcasting setup, all you need is a computer, microphone, headset (optional, but preferable), and an audio editing program, such as Audacity/Camtasia.
1.Existing personal computer with USB port (PC or Apple)
2.Built in microphone, or inexpensive digital USB headset ($30 - $50)
3.Audio editing program (free, multi-platform), such as Audacity

Portable Classroom/Field Recording Podcast Setup
Zoom H-2 140 portable digital audio recorder
ATR Lavalier microphone (body)
Video Setup
Podcasts can be converted from just about any mutlimedia file, videos included. You can use a digital video camera with a built-in microphone and record a decent video. You can use various software applications, such as Window Movie Maker or iMovie to edit and save the video and then use a file converter program to turn those files into the video format used by iTunes: mpg4 file.

For SCC's Professional Development Day, Richard Wamsley, Jose Calderon, Nick Batterson, and I are presenting a double-session entitled "Podcasting 101".

We will introduce our attendees to the fundamentals of podcasting then provide a hand-on session. In the hands-on session attendees will record, post, and listen to a short audio podcast.
